I have always like B&W images in action photography. In this case, I caught the chaos of a fumble in a Navy vs. Air Force game. I have no idea why the dude in the middle was jumping upward, and am guessing that neither did he. I was known at the time for catching embarrassing moments in games, like this one., which the base newspaper included in their stories. The difficulty in this type of work is maintaining an exposure that produces detail in the dark areas, without frying the whites to burnout, with no opportunity to use bracketing, since the movement is only going to last for one frame at a time, and the film speed (in this case 400ASA – thus the soft image quality) does not give you much room for exposure mistakes.
